Farm Open Days

The Farmer Network organises several walks each year for the general public on working farms, some with Friends of the Lake District and some independently.  These farms are not normally open to visitors and they provide a unique insight into the working of commercial farms in the Lake District and surrounds.

Further walks that are part of the Fell Sheep Project to be staged at Cockermouth Auction on June 14th.

The walks are:-

1) On June 8th starting at 2 pm at Nook Farm, Rosthwaite, hosted by Stan and Carol Jackson, who welcome visitors to learn more about sheep farming on the central lakeland fells. Stan and Carol breed and show prize-winning Herdwick sheep and also cross breed some for the food chain. They also keep a suckler beef herd and are happy to explain about hound trailing in the Borrowdale Valley. Refreshments are available nearby tea shop, The Flock Inn.

2) On June 15th at 2pm at Wythop Hall Farm in the Embleton Valley, near Cockermouth, hosted by Robert and Judith Emmott. They also are successful show winners with Swaledale, Mule and other varieties of sheep and keep a suckler beef herd. Visitors will walk through fields with recently born lambs and calves and learn about farming in this beautiful secluded valley. The more energetic can enjoy a walk onto the surrounding fells of Barf, Lord's Seat etc.

For further information about these 2 walks phone Joyce on 01946 862348.
