At Patterdale, we see Jimmy and his father working in the sheep pens, giving the sheep some medicines and feeding the sheep to keep the pregnant ewes healthy, as well as some stone walling and fencing that needs to be done.  We also see his young twin daughters, Jessica and Holly who have just started to walk and see him off the farm in the local community, when playing football and playing guitar in his local band.

Dorothy Wilkinson at Coniston helps on the farm when needed and is passionate about the herdwick sheep they keep.  We see Dorothy helping husband, Glen in the sheep pens, Glen and George feeding the stock in the buildings and on the fells, as well as repairing machinery and fences over a couple of typical working winter days.  We get to understand what drives Dorothy and her family to each work 65 – 70 hours each week in the winter, seeing their dogs gathering sheep and watching a calf being born.

Although much of the daily work is routine in the winter, the film gives an insight into the life of modern day shepherds in this beautiful part of England and how their lives and the local community are an integral part of sustaining this beautiful but fragile landscape.

Special thanks in making this video to the Brown and Wilkinson families who have given up much free time in making this first diary.
